Hi there! I have a question if you don't mind. I just came recently and still struggling. Teaching is fun and the school where I work at is nice too. I am still adjusting. One day, one of my student's mom asked me if I could teacher her son after school. I want to save while I'm still here but I don't have any idea about being a private tutor and stuff. Have you had private tutoring lessons? How much is it for an hour or so? Can you give me some ideas? I'd love to read your answer. Thank you!

hi!  i love questions so ask anytime!  lol! for privates~ just a warning~ if i’m not mistaken, i think they’re illegal still~~~ sooooo be very careful~

with that said~ i have had my fair share of my privates in my day lol.  they were all different as far as age groups. from kindy to elementary to high school and adults. sometimes parents like to negotiate or you give them your ‘rate’. for me, i just did 40,000 an hour if there is only 1 or 2 students. i did have 1 parent who made ‘clubs’ and i taught several hours at a time at a group rate so thats different.  but you can easily be taken advantage of in those kinds of situations. at times i think i spent more time preparing for those clubs than for my own job because the mom was crazy and wanted tests and worksheets and cnn with comprehension stuff. anyway!

40,000 apparently is considered cheap so you could try for more and negotiate from there. it also depends on location and stuff. if youre having to travel a long distance then take that into consideration. sometimes youre not really making all that much. also take into account that you’ll get tired and not want to go… but they count on you to be there everytime. i have had from one lesson per week, 2-3 times a week to everyday and sometimes weekends if they want to make up for a class. it can be exhausting and frustrating. if you miss a lesson, usually its expected to be rescheduled to the weekend or another day in the week. and if you have winter vacation, they may ask you to work then or you can find a substitute for the time.

as to when to ask for money~ i usually had people pay me after the first lesson for the month. or once a week. some people have paid at the end of the month too.

for materials, it depends on the level of the student. i usually take the first day to evaluate what we can work on. sometimes parents expect everything to be covered: speaking, listening, reading, writing, sometimes grammar and spelling. ive had just 1 book in a class to 3-5 at one point. if you have many books then just work a bit at a time in each. check online for what people recommend. for younger kids, i like the 100 words to know by the 1st grade and so on. and i usually pick a kids book to get through (chapter book). for homework, if they can, i give diary assignments or writing practice and sometimes tell them to study spelling then they’ll have a test in the next class

anyway~~~ i hope i helped!  i know how it is when you want to save~~ i had a friend that pretty much made almost 2M per month extra from privates~~ boy and i are considering it an option after we get married and start having kids. but more like a little kindergarten in our house for the neighbor kids. at least then itd be legal. haha

sorry this is super long!  good luck to you and let me know how it goes~~~
